Automatic Detection of Epileptiform Discharges in the EEG

چکیده
The diagnosis of epilepsy generally includes a visual inspection of EEG recorded data by the Neurologist, with the purpose of checking the occurrence of transient waveforms called interictal epileptiform discharges. These waveforms have short duration (less than 100 ms), so the inspection process is usually time-consuming, particularly for ambulatory long-term EEG records. Therefore, an automatic detection system of epileptiform discharges can be a valuable tool for a Neurology service. The proposed approach is the development of a multi-stage detection algorithm, which processes the complete EEG signals and applies decision criteria to selected waveforms. It employs EEG analysis techniques such as Wavelet Transform and Mimetic Analysis, complemented with a classification based on Fuzzy Logic. In order to evaluate the algorithm’s performance, data were collected from several epileptic patients, with epileptiform activity marked by a Neurologist. The average values obtained for both Sensitivity and Specificity were respectively higher than 80% and 70%.

The Utility of EEG in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Replication Study.
The routine use of stimulants in pediatrics has increased dramatically over the past 3 decades and the long-term consequences have yet to be fully studied. Since 1978 there have been 7 articles identifying electroencephalogram (EEG) abnormalities, particularly epileptiform discharges in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Many have studied the prevalence of these disc...
متن کاملAutomatic Identification of Interictal Epileptiform Discharges in Secondary Generalized Epilepsy
Ictal epileptiform discharges (EDs) are characteristic signal patterns of scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) or intracranial EEG (iEEG) recorded from patients with epilepsy, which assist with the diagnosis and characterization of various types of epilepsy. The EEG signal, however, is often recorded from patients with epilepsy for a long period of time, and thus detection and identification of EDs...
متن کاملDetection of Interictal Epileptiform Discharges in Eeg
The diagnosis of epilepsy heavily depends on the detection of epileptiform discharges in interictal EEG, the EEG in between two seizures. By visual analysis a physician wants to detect these epileptiform discharges (spikes). Due to the wide variety of morphologies of epileptiform discharges, and their similarity to waves that are part of normal EEG or to artifacts, this detection is far from st...
متن کاملAbsence of early epileptiform abnormalities predicts lack of seizures on continuous EEG.
OBJECTIVE To determine whether the absence of early epileptiform abnormalities predicts absence of later seizures on continuous EEG monitoring of hospitalized patients. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 242 consecutive patients without a prior generalized convulsive seizure or active epilepsy who underwent continuous EEG monitoring lasting at least 18 hours for detection of nonconvulsive se...
متن کاملAutomatic Detecition of Epileptiform Discharges in Eeg Using a Back-propagation Network
This paper presents an automatic approach to detect epileptiform discharges (ED) in electroencephalogram (EEG). On the algorithm we utilized back-propagation artificial neural network (BPN) to detect ED. We train BPN respectively for each patient and induce parameter k to determine a threshold value. The result shows that the algorithm can determine presence or absence of ED automatically, and ...
